These airers are sold untreated and it is up to the customer whether they treat or not. Some customers have used several coats of varnish. If used to dry wet/damp clothes the rungs will darken over time but they do not stain the clothes. I have one which has darkened over the years and it now has a worn and well used look which I personally like. I regularly use it to dry my washing and none of my whites have ever been left with a stain. The airer remains as sturdy and strong as when first purchased.
